DocRead reads documents aloud inside your web browser. This page explains what that means for your data.

Your documents

Files you open and text you paste are processed entirely on your device. They are never uploaded to DocRead or to anyone else, and DocRead has no server that could receive them.

What is stored on your device

  • The voice model (about 65 MB) is kept in your browser's cache so it doesn't download again.
  • Your reading position for each document is kept in your browser's storage (IndexedDB), identified by a fingerprint of the document's text, not its name or contents.
  • Your settings (voice, speed, CPU or GPU) are kept in your browser's local storage.
  • The site's pages and code are kept in your browser's cache so DocRead works offline.

You can delete all of this at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.

Services involved

  • Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host, it handles your IP address and basic request information to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse.
  • Hugging Face hosts the open voice model and voice files. Your browser downloads them from Hugging Face the first time you play something, so Hugging Face receives the request, including your IP address.

Visit and usage counts

To learn whether DocRead is useful and what to improve, the site keeps anonymous counts. They contain no cookies, no identifiers and nothing that could tell us who you are or what you read.

  • Page visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies or track you across sites. It records the page, the referring site, and your browser, device type and country.
  • Feature use is counted by DocRead itself: that a document was opened (its format, such as PDF, and its word count), that play was pressed, roughly how long was listened to, whether audio was saved, how long the voice model took to load, and whether something failed. Each count includes the page and the site or link tag you arrived from. Your IP address is not stored with these counts.

File names, document text and anything you type are never sent. DocRead does not use cookies, has no accounts and does not show ads. If ads are ever added, this page will be updated before they appear, and any consent required by law will be asked for.

Children

DocRead is a general-audience tool and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
