What gets read
DocRead follows the book's own reading order, chapter by chapter. It skips the table of contents, the little footnote markers in the text and pages the book marks as outside the main flow, so you hear the book rather than its navigation.
Where to find DRM-free EPUBs
Books from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks are free and DRM-free, and many publishers and bundle stores sell DRM-free EPUBs too. Your own EPUBs, exported from a writing app, work as well.
Books that won't open
Books bought from stores that lock them to their own apps (Kindle, Apple Books and most library loans) are encrypted. DocRead can't read encrypted books and will say so when you open one.
Also on DocRead: PDF to speech · Word to audio · Text to speech · Markdown to speech.
Questions
Can I listen to Kindle books?
No. Kindle books use their own formats and DRM. DocRead reads DRM-free EPUB files.
Does it remember where I stopped in a book?
Yes. Open the same EPUB again in the same browser and it picks up at the sentence where you stopped.
Can I turn an EPUB into an audiobook file?
Yes, with Save audio in the player's ⋯ menu, which makes one WAV file. A full novel takes a while to generate and makes a large file, roughly 170 MB per hour of audio.
Is my book uploaded?
No. The book is unpacked and read entirely in your browser.
